‘Flag Lady’ honors veterans in Amherst, NH

Posted on Jan 25, 2011 under wreaths | Comments are off

(NECN: Lauren Collins, Amherst, NH) – One New Hampshire woman has made it her mission to honor the servicemen of her town’s past this holiday season. She’s known as Amherst’s flag lady. Marie Grella chairs the Memorial Day parade and raised the money for the flagpole in the town center. Now she’s on to a new project after, three years ago, “I was watching the news and they showed Arlington cemetery with all the wreaths and I said I’ve got to do that.” For the second holiday season in a row, every veteran headstone in each of the town’s 5 cemeteries has a wreath. All of them donated by the manager at the Amherst Walmart. “Last year he graciously donated 380 wreaths and this year we needed ten more and he called me up and says, ‘no problem.’” The bows, she and a friend tied by hand — all 390, with donated velvet ribbon. Volunteers gathered Sunday to place the wreaths, a task made simpler thanks to Grella’s passion for town history. “A few years ago,” she says, “I ran another project and bought veterans markers and put them in front of all the graves. I literally walked the cemeteries and found the veterans and put a market on ‘em.” “Grella made an effort to adorn every veteran headstone regardless of when that person served. At the town cemetery in Amherst, many of the markers date back to the colonial era. “The veterans play a big part in our being here. And they need to have some recognition. Not just a day, they need to be recognized always, no matter how far back they
