Here are some plants you can grow in hanging baskets to make a great display:
Asparagus Fern (Asparagus plumosus)
These can be grown from seed but the seedlings are the victims of so many insect pests that it is better to purchase small plants in February and grow them on in the warm house for spring and early summer sales.
Feathery green trailing growth, plus small white flowers which often produce small red fruits, make this a froth of green for the window box or planter. Here it is seldom bothered with pests unless the season is exceptionally hot and dry, then it may become infested with red spider.
If you have old plants left over, you can divide them with a sharp knife, potting up the pieces of long white tubers and foliage in 4-inch pots of greenhouse soil. They also make wonderful hanging basket plants for the patio or greenhouse.
Begonia
Nearly everyone knows the little wax begonia (B. semper-florens), with its shiny leaves and white, pink, or red flowers. You can purchase a large plant of the wax begonia and propagate most of your own stock through cuttings grown in the warm house, buy small potted plants for retail, or grow these fibrous-rooted begonias from seed. The procedure from seed is like that for most house plants, (page 112).
Equally good for window boxes are the hanging basket types of tuberous-rooted begonias. The single or double flowers range from white and yellow through pink, salmon, and red.
Dracaena
Most gardeners think of dracaena as a house plant but it makes a good tough item for outdoor planting in summer. And you can always tell your customers it serves double duty. When the window box season has finished, it can be dug up, potted, and used as a house plant.
This is another item I believe is best purchased as small potted plants. You won’t want too many to start with-probably no more than 2 dozen-and they are low priced. D. fragrans has green leaves but many varieties have striped and speckled foliage. There’s D. Massangeana with a wide golden stripe along the leaf midrib; D. Godseffiana, with flecks of white on its foliage; D. Goldieana has green and silver foliage; and D. Sanderianq, a slender plant, with glossy green leaves margined white.
If you have plants left over, you can propagate more from tip, stem, or root cuttings struck in a propagating bed or case. They must be grown in the warm house.
Heliotrope
The dwarf form of heliotrope, with its heads of blue or white flowers, makes a wonderful plant for window box or planter (and is fine also for bedding or as an accent plant).
Heliotrope is easily grown from cuttings taken in the fall. These are sold in pots the following spring. Grow the cuttings in any medium you prefer, in a warm house. As soon as they are well rooted you can plant them in 3-inch pots of greenhouse soil. When the plants reach the height you want, cut out the top so the plant will branch.
Hoya Carnosa
Often called the wax plant or Swedish ivy, this plant with its heavy, glossy, green or variegated leaves and huge clusters of waxy white or pink flowers makes a marvelous summer window box plant. And it, too, serves double duty. In the fall it can be brought into the house and used in a hanging basket or trained up the side of a window.
It’s best to buy this one as rooted cuttings; pot them in rich soil, and grow them in the warm house. You probably won’t want to start out with more than twenty-five. If you keep some over and want them to flower in your greenhouse, do not take tip cuttings. The blooms form on the tips and after the plants have flowered, they will produce a second-year flower crop on these same tips.
Pandanus
Here’s another plant which doubles for window box and in¬door garden. The green foliage is bordered or striped with white or yellow.
As a starter, buy un-rooted cuttings and root them in flats of light soil mixture at 65 degrees F. When they are rooted, in about 3 weeks, pot in 3-inch pots. Plants started in March are ready for later spring sales.
Thunbergia
Although generally reserved for greenhouse decoration, thunbergia makes a good trailer for the window box. Its flowers, produced freely throughout the summer, are white, cream, orange red, and in shades of blue-purple.
Thunbergia, called clock vine, is easily propagated through cuttings or seed sown in the spring in the warm house. Pot up into 2-inch pots as soon as the cuttings or seedlings can be easily handled.
Wishbone Plant (Torenia)
Small gloxinia-like flowers in white and yellow, plain yellow, or blue and white, and tiny green leaves, plus a trailing habit when grown in partial shade, make the wishbone plant unusual material for the window box, planter, or hanging basket.
In warmer areas of the country, this one is handled as many northern gardeners handle pansies.
Sow the seeds in March in loose soil and grow in the warm house. Do not let seedlings dry out-they may not revive. As soon as you can handle them, perhaps mid-April, plant them in 3-inch pots of porous soil.
The popularity of hanging baskets, outdoor planter boxes, and window boxes makes it necessary that you should know a little about the type of plants your customers will want to purchase for use in these garden “areas.” Almost any of the small vines, or trailers-Vinca ma\or, hoya, wandering Jew, trailing petunias, begonias, and ivy geranium-will do beautifully. The upright geraniums often are depended upon to furnish the bulk of bloom for both types of planters. Most of the small bedding plants also are good.

Silk trees and silk plants have changed a lot since I used to work with them. Back in 1985, I had a job at my cousins silk plants store called Fantasy Forest. There was a small showroom up front where customers could see the finished product, and a large warehouse area in back where we actually created the designs. We would get boxes of silk flowers and artificial tree branches with silk leaves and/or silk flowers attached. Silk Ficus Trees were very popular as were flowering trees such as Apple Blossom, Cherry Blossom and Dogwood.
Periodically, we would get shipments of real Birch tree trunks in various diameters and heights. Since most silk trees were custom made, I would start by choosing a limb closest to the height needed. I would mix plaster in a cardboard planter and insert the trunk. Drying took a couple of hours, depending on the size. A paper planter was used so it could be peeled away, leaving just the plaster “cast”. The cast would then be placed into a decorative planter. Moss and/or silk ivy would be arranged on top of the plaster to cover and disguise it. After the trunk had set, the branches were added. Starting at the top, I would drill a diagonal hole completely through the trunk. I’d fill the hole with hot glue and insert the silk tree branch. I’d hold it in position until the glue cooled. The branches would then be shaped to look like a real tree.
As I said, most of our silk trees were custom made. One order we did was for a Las Vegas shopping mall. The silk trees were all at least 20 feet tall. We made 25 foot silk trees for a Las Vegas nightclub. Silk trees of that size were always done on-site, as transporting them was difficult and could cause damage.
Of course we did much more than silk trees. We constantly got orders for silk wedding bouquets. Though most couples used real flowers for the wedding, many brides would have the bouquets made with silk flowers, so they would keep without losing their beauty. Most of our silk plant arrangements were custom made for people who needed to fill up space in a large area of their home. Silk plants are wonderful for areas up high or hard to get at, since they require no water and only need to be cleaned every few months.
Looking back, as beautiful as our creations were, the products we used were nowhere near the quality available today. Silk trees and silk plants I see now are unbelievably vibrant and life like. I’ve seen silk plants I actually had to feel to know if they were real. I especially enjoy live plants with silk flowers mixed in. A clever way of adding more variety and color without flowers wilting. Silk trees and silk plants can balance a room by filling in spaces with year round color and beauty.

Floriculture is the horticultural practice of cultivating and growing plants for gardens, fresh flowers for the cut-flower industry and in pots for indoor use. Horticulture involves the science of flower and plant cultivation and in floristry uses biochemistry, physiology, plant breeding and crop production, always looking to produce better quality plants and increase their ability to resist environmental impact. The floral industry relies heavily on floriculture to provide quality, ornamental blooms for aesthetic decorations in homes, gardens and flower bouquets. Floriculturists or flower farmers also develop new plant varieties by practicing plant breeding. Plant crops are usually herbaceous (they lose foliage after flowering) and are manufactured using pots or trays known as cell packs through use of controlled methods. Popular flowers produced are poinsettias, azaleas, orchids, chrysanthemums and roses as well as foliage plants for interior use.Floriculture is responsible for providing most of the world with plants, flowers and shrubs. Sprawling cities and developments make finding varieties of flowers and plants growing naturally a very difficult task, and when flowers are seen growing, they are usually blooms which have been cultivated by floriculturists. Floriculture brings the best of nature to an everyday household or office. Ornamental PlantsOrnamental plants certainly live up to their name. These plants are produced at flower farms to be used domestically in homes and gardens for their pretty and appealing flowers, pleasant fragrance, interesting leaves and particular stems and bark. Landscapers frequently use ornamental plants for creating interesting and often unusual displays of these appealing blooms, as does the cut-flower industry. Unusual features are often considered fashionable in these plants.House PlantsHouse plants are grown for decorative value for indoor use in domestic settings and other interiors such as offices. These plants provide a host of benefits to a room that are not only décor related, but also intrinsic to health and the environment. These plants produce oxygen and clean the air, providing a purer indoor environment. “Sick Building Syndrome” is a common complaint amongst office staff as computers, air conditioners and other office equipment causes an increase in toxins in the air which then lurk in the interior environment.Fatigue, coughing, a sore throat, dry skin and headaches are all symptomatic of this syndrome but the addition of plants to an interior space can reduce symptoms by approximately 30%. Floriculture provides a multitude of tropical and semi tropical plants which comprise the majority of house plants sold, even in countries without warm tropical conditions.Bedding PlantsBedding plants are assortments of flowering and vegetable plants, both annuals and perennials which are resilient to colder temperatures and harsh weather conditions. Floriculture and the scientific expertise of flower farming produces bedding plants which are most resilient to these conditions and can breed plants which are hardier for longevity. Geraniums are a good example of bedding plants as they can withstand frost. Despite losing their flowers in winter, they regain them the following spring. These plants bring colour to a garden in dull parts or where there are no other flowers.Cut Flower IndustryThe cut flower industry is an extremely popular and successful branch of floriculture. Flower bouquet stores or florists world-wide provide millions of deliveries of cut flowers, arranged in bouquets, posies, displays and baskets to customers for a variety of occasions. Different methods are employed by floriculturists including specific pruning styles and spacing techniques. After flowers have reached the correct growth for harvesting, they undergo chemical preservation treatments and packaging. Cut flowers are sold in florist shops, supermarkets, petrol stations, through street vendors and most popularly, through websites where customers can order their flowers online from brochures on the website. The products available from these retailers are quite remarkable as they are arranged by highly trained professionals, skilled in the art of flower arrangement. Flower arranging or floral design involves the use of materials such as cut flowers, grasses and other foliages which are arranged in a spectacular display in bouquets, pots, baskets and vases.Fresh cut flowers make a very specialised gift idea. A fresh flower delivery from a reputable retailer will usually be guaranteed to be of a very high quality. Scientific expertise, specific growing conditions and treatments by expert floriculturists means that the flower bouquet will have an appearance that is tastefully arranged whilst the blooms keep their bright appearance of fresh cut flowers. A flower bouquet store also allows customers to order and make a secure payment via the store’s website. A fresh flower delivery can be made on the same day the order was placed. Why not order a bouquet of fresh cut and hand tied flowers and allow yourself and others to experience the beauty which nature is capable of providing.

While it is in general terms a good thing to try to improve soil conditions, it is possible to live with existing conditions by choosing your plants carefully. Many plants have adapted their demands so that they are able to live with drought, particularly plants that come originally from Mediterranean climates.
It is very important to choose plants that will tolerate such dry soils. If you try to get ordinary plants to grow in them, you will be disappointed because they will not be able get enough moisture or food from the soil and will not grow very well. If, however, you choose plants that have adapted to these conditions, you should have few problems in creating an interesting garden.
There are a few plants for dry conditions. Few gardens have desert conditions, so you do not have to go to extremes and grow only succulents, such as cacti, that tolerate such places. However, there are a lot of plants that come from parts of the world where, for example, dry summers are followed by wet autumns and winters. Many annuals come from these areas, so do bulbs and many silver leaved plants, try combining these to create an unusual but beautiful garden where their subtle colors are well set off by a gravel background. Weed these areas well, or the effect will be ruined.
How do we create a gravel garden? Many gardeners specifically set out to create dry conditions by adding great quantities of gravel to the ordinary soils. This increases its drainage ability and makes it suitable for plants that you may not have been able to grow before.
Examples of plants for dry gardens are Allium hollandicum, Argemone, Artemesia, Bergenia, Canna, Crambe, Elymus, Lavatera, Salvia, Sedum, Verbascum, Yucca, Pennisetum, Glaucium flavum, Onopordon acanthium, and Ophiopogon planiscapus.
A surprisingly large number of plants like dry conditions and a very attractive garden can be built around them. Grasses are excellent for dry gardens. Annuals, such as Marigold (calendula) and vipers bugloss (echium vulgure) will self sow to provide next year’s plants.
