German Soldiers lay wreaths as part of a ceremony to commemorate Canadian and German soldiers who fought from 1939 – 1945 during World War Two. Students placed flags and wreathes and observed a minute of silence. This ceremony marked the end of a European Battlefield Tour, from Paris to Berlin. ONE of the biggest crowds Tiverton has seen on a Remembrance Sunday turned out to honour the sacrifices made by our armed forces. The parade which began on Fore Street at 10.30am was supported by groups such as the Brownies and Scouts, former war veterans, and civic dignitaries. Brigadier Robin-Rhoderick Jones orchestrated the parade to St Peter’s Church where the Tiverton Town Band played God Save the Queen, before the procession gathered inside for the service. After the church service, the parade made their way back down towards Angel Hill to lay wreaths on the Memorial Building with the mayor, Cllr Lester Crocker, laying the first. He said: “The response today, with the amount of people who turned out in the streets was brilliant. There seemed to be a lot more response this year. “Today is about honouring the people who have fallen in the past so we can be here today. I feel honoured and privileged to be able to be mayor at this event with so many people turning up.” Chairman of the Royal British Legion Ramsay Hutchison praised the Tivertonians for attending the event: “There were considerably more people in the parade, , and the support from the people on the street was wonderful.” “I have never seen a crowd like it, or a parade like it in a small town such as Tiverton, and it just shows what the feeling of today is all about. “I think there is more effort by people to show what remembrance is all about, and we have the backing of town and district councils to help.”
SINGAPORE : Madam Kwa Geok Choo – the wife of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, and mother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has died on Saturday. Mrs Lee Kuan Yew, age 89, passed away peacefully at home at 5.40 pm. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said the wake is held at Sri Temasek, official residence of the Prime Minister located within the Istana grounds, from October 4-5. Visitors who wish to pay their last respects may do so on October 4-5 from 10am to 5pm. Members of the public may call 6835 6614 for any queries. A private funeral will take place on October 6 at Mandai Crematorium. The family requests that no obituaries and no wreaths or flowers to be sent. All donations will go to the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) Health Research Endowment Fund. Madam Kwa was one of 8 children. An outstanding student at Methodist Girls’ School, she also topped the 1936 Senior Cambridge Examination for the whole of Malaya and Singapore. At Raffles Institution, she caught the attention of a young Lee Kuan Yew when she gave him unexpectedly stiff competition for a Queen’s Scholarship. But academic rivalry aside, he knew he had found his equal, and his soul mate. Their relationship grew through the years of Japanese Occupation, and by September 1944, love had blossomed. When World War II ended, Mr Lee left to study law in England in 1946. But he was miserable until she joined him at Cambridge University a year later. The two married secretly on 23 December 1947. Though memories of the Second World War are gradually fading, the Second World War still represents a watershed in our history. It continues to occupy our thoughts and conversations, and remains a constant reminder of the fragility of civilisation and democracy. Liberation Germany occupied the Netherlands on 10 May 1940. The number of people still alive who lived through the war has obviously declined. By 2000, they formed no more than 20 percent of the population.
