Summer Wine® Ninebark

The common name of Physocarpus is Ninebark. The name comes from its shaggy, deeply peeling bark that appears after it gets a few years on it. Summer Wine® ninebark has more appeal in its leaves and flowers than in its bark. Use it in mass plantings or as a specimen. Shape it into a full bush or leave it naturally arching. The leaves are purple in cool climate gardens and more blackish/green in the hot climates. Little button flowers appear all along the stems in early spring. Summer Wine is not fussy; acid or alkaline soil makes no difference to this shrub. It is hardy in USDA Zones 3-8. If established with steady watering its first year, it will be hardier during dry spells in the years after. Bring out its best foliage color by planting it in full sun.
