Kitni Girhen Kholi Hain Maine
Album: Chand Parosa Hai
Narrator: Gulzar Singh
Vocals: Mitali Singh
Dear viewer, following description is neither lyrics nor translation of Gulzar Singh’s ghazal ” Kitni Girhen Kholi Hain” . After careful listening of this ghazal and reading of Sahir Ludhyanvi’s poem ” Jinhen Naaz Hai Hind Par Woh Kahan Hain” for film “Pyasa 1957″ Passion found enough similarity between them. Finally to avoid any confusion, only translation is given here, which is a great tool to understand Gulzar’s Philosophy.
These lanes, these marts of rich delights,
Precious lives, undone, defiled;
Where are the defenders of virtuous pride?
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
These sinuous streets, these doors ajar,
The clinking coins, the moving masks,
Deals of honour, hagglings fast,
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
These dimly-lighted, stinking streets,
These yellowing buds, crushed and ceased,
These hollow charms, for sale and lease;
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
The jingling trinklets at casement bright,
Tambourins athrob mid gasping life;
Cheerless rooms with cough alive;
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
Boisterous laughs on public paths,
Crowds at windows, thick and fast,
Vulgar words, obscene remarks;
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
The betel spittal, the floral wreaths,
Audacious looks and filthy speech,
Flaccid figures, looks diseased;
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
Lecherous eyes in beautys quest,
Extended hands chasing breasts,
Springing feet on stairs pressed;
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
This is the haven of young and old.
Aging sires and youngsters bold,
Wife, mother and sister — she plays a triple role.
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
Help, O Help, this daughter of Eve!
Radhas child, Yashodas breed;
The prophets race, Zuleikhas seed;
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?
Call, O call the leaders wise
Let them see these streets, these sights,
Where are the champs of eastern pride?
Where are they who praise, the pious eastern ways?

Interesting, I was …
Interesting, I was science student in my high school and civics or ” Shehriat” was only for Arts students. I still used to read civics books and learned, our whole social structure is wrong. If politicians act upon political rules, then politicians will disappear from our countries. Politicians build the bridges where there is no water.

I am glad too, but my friend I have to send this video to my friends to watch it. We like the stuff which doesn’t require any hard work. like readings or going into the depth of the material. That is why viewers love, ready made film clips.

It also reminds me …
It also reminds me a few verses from one song of film ” Awargi” ,
Kaya tamasha hua sahibo
Yeh tamashe to hote hi rahte hain jee
Is se pehle mera naam kuchh aur tha
Ab twaif, mujhe log kahte hain jee
Mujre wali hoon, main mujrah karti hoon
Ruswa hoti hoon, main sab ko ruswa karti hoon,
Aakhir insan hoon, hansti hoon, roti hoon
Jab aap nahin hote, main tanha hoti hoon

I truly believe …
I truly believe what you said, in the East women need break free, what about the West? If women in the West think they are absolutely free, they must think again. Real free society can be formed only when both sexes accept each other with love and respect. Act for duties, not fight for rights only.
