More effectively than OTC or over the counter drugs and cough suppresants? Indeed it does.

A little bit of honey, taken before bedtime, may ease coughing in children. It seems Grandma may have been right again.

Pennsylvania State University researchers reported that news based on 130 children with coughs.

They were divided into three groups. One was treated with dextromethorphan, the most common (and often touted as the most efficient) over the counter cough suppresant. Another group was treated with buckwheat honey and the final group was treated with absolutely nothing.

Honey won.

Not by much, but it was just as effective if not more so than a drug. I don’t know about you, but I would much rather take a spoonful of honey than a spoonful of drug and as far as my kids go, honey wins hands down. Especially if it is more effective than conventional treatment.

A word of warning here. DO NOT GIVE HONEY TO CHILDREN UNDER 1 YEAR OF AGE since it can potentially cause botulism.

Honey can be taken by itself or mixed with tea and/or lemon juice. Darker honey tends to have more antioxidants and pure, raw honey has the greatest anti-microbial effect. Just don’t give anyone too much because of the high carb content.

Honey is truly a wonder food. It is one of the most efficient and effective anti-microbial substances there is. Honey has been found preserved in jars hundreds of years old and it is still not only edible, but sweet and tasty. By itself it simply will not spoil. It has been used to treat wounds and even gangrene for years on various battlefields with success.

Shamans, curanderas and witch doctors the world over, not to mention Mom’s and Grandmas have recognized honey’s attributes for centuries. We are just now getting around to proving them.

You have a cough, try some honey. You have a real bad cough, try some honey and some capsaicin (the stuff that makes chili peppers hot) in the form of chili powder or chili sauce or even tabasco sauce in a tea. Very, very effective. I know, I grew up on it. I preferred New Mexico chili pods myself. Nothing better when mixed with raw honey. In fact, we used to buy honey and chili already mixed.

The study, funded by the National Honey Board, appears in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine

Coffee has gotten a bad reputation over the years. Between the negative attentions that it has garnered due to its caffeine content and a few misreported findings that hinted at health problems caused by drinking coffee, many people believe that coffee is not good for you.

The perception is that coffee is great for a pick-me-up but it can cause health problems down the road. Actually, not only is this generally untrue but drinking coffee has several health-related benefits. With the surge in popularity of gourmet coffees, it has been discovered that some of these gourmet roasts can actually have an even greater health benefit than standard coffee roasts.

Contrary to what was believed for many years, drinking coffee can actually be quite good for you, provided that it is done in moderation. Coffee beans tend to be quite high in antioxidants, and many gourmet coffees have even higher antioxidant content. Because gourmet coffees are usually more carefully roasted than standard coffees which will be powdered or freeze-dried, more of the oils that are rich in antioxidants will be preserved throughout the roasting process and make it in to your cup of coffee. These antioxidants have a variety of health benefits ranging from an improved immune system to healthier skin, teeth, and hair.

Though there are a number of artificial and non-dairy creamers available, many people still prefer to use milk, cream, or half-and-half for their coffee. Gourmet coffee shops tend to use real dairy products in lattes, cappuccinos, and other coffee drinks. By using real milk or dairy products instead of a non-dairy substitute you can gain the additional health benefits of milk and dairy when you have your coffee. This includes added calcium and fatty acids, with the calcium being good for your bones and joints and fatty acids helping to keep your brain healthy and your memory strong.

Various studies have found a number of health conditions that coffee can help to prevent. Some of the most prominent of these include serious health concerns such as Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and even some types of skin cancer.

In addition to the preventative effect that antioxidant-rich coffee can have when it comes to these conditions, some studies have even shown that drinking coffee every day can help to slow the progression of some of these diseases if they are already present and may even help to make other treatment options function better. This is not to say that coffee alone will cure these serious conditions, but there is a lot of evidence which shows that it can at least have somewhat of a positive benefit when it comes to both prevention and treatment.

Another condition that gourmet coffee can help to prevent has been getting a lot of attention due to a study released in 2007. A link has been found which seems to suggest that drinking coffee daily can greatly reduce the damage which is done to the liver by alcohol and that it can either slow or prevent cirrhosis of the liver both due to alcohol consumption and other causes.

At first it was considered to simply be the caffeine contained in the coffee that caused this effect, but a similar prevention was not noted among tea drinkers or others who had similar caffeine intakes; though the specific ingredient in coffee which causes this benefit has not been identified, it is clear that it is a coffee-specific compound and is most likely one or a combination of the antioxidants contained in coffee oil. Since gourmet coffee tends to contain a higher amount of these antioxidants it is likely that it will provide exceptional protection against liver damage.

Despite all of the warnings that have been given over the years about how the caffeine in coffee can cause excess stress on the heart and higher blood pressure, newer research has shown just the opposite; it is believed that the caffeine in coffee combined with a number of antioxidants can actually help to prevent some types of heart disease.

These implications of are of special importance to the elderly, as the study showed that individuals over 65 who regularly drank coffee were at a significantly reduced risk of heart disease than others who drank decaf coffee or no coffee at all.

Similar to many other things, coffee should be consumed in moderation. Even with all of its health benefits, gourmet coffee can still cause problems if it is enjoyed in too large of quantities or too frequently. However, provided that you do not overdo it, coffee can be a great part of your daily routine and can give you a health boost that you were not expecting.

Most people throw away old coffee grounds after they are done brewing a pot of their favorite coffee. However, it is a good idea to rethink this action, as there are a number of things that those grounds could be used for.

A growing trend is to toss coffee grounds onto a compost heap so that the nutrients contained within enrich the compost, but that is only touching the tip of the iceberg. Here are some uses of coffee grounds that you might never have considered but that you should take a moment to consider before you toss your next batch of coffee grounds in the trash can.

In addition to being used as a component of your compost, coffee grounds can help plants by themselves as well. Mix a few coffee grounds in with the soil when planting flowers and other plants that benefit form acidic soil. The plants can absorb the nutrients as they grow.

Some garden plants such as carrots and radishes do especially well with coffee grounds, and you can increase your yield by mixing some grounds in with the seeds before you start to plant. Adding additional coffee grounds around the base of plants as they grow can give them an added boost at a greatly reduced cost to most plant foods and fertilizers.

Also, if you are trying to control pests, coffee grounds can have a wonderful effect on that process as well. Place coffee grounds around the foundation of your home in areas where insects or other pests are entering, or mix them in with mulch while doing landscaping to help keep ants and termites from infesting your mulch bed.

Putting used grounds around flowers or plants in your garden will also help to repel snails and slugs that might otherwise cause serious damage to your plants. If the pests that you are worried about are of the larger variety, sprinkling coffee grounds over flower beds can help keep cats, dogs, and other animals from digging in the bed or damaging your plants. For added effectiveness, mix the coffee grounds with small portions of fresh orange peel before placing them in the flower beds.

This option is certainly not for everyone, but coffee grounds can also be used as a beauty product as well. They can enrich hair, soften skin, and even help to control unwanted cellulite. Coffee grounds can be a wonderful exfoliate, and can be used as easily as applying them wet to the skin then rubbing them over the skin before rinsing them off. Again, this application is not for everyone.

Provided you do not have bleached or exceedingly light hair that readily absorbs color, a similar method can be used to enrich your hair while taking a shower; rub the coffee grounds into your hair then rinse them away to make your hair softer and add additional shine to it. Coffee grounds that are warmed and mixed with a little bit of olive oil can be applied to areas where you have problems with cellulite, then held tightly in place with plastic wrap for several minutes. Take a warm shower afterwards, and those problem areas will begin to soften and become much less unsightly.

A more traditional use of coffee grounds is to control odors or get rid of unwanted smells. Place a bowl of used grounds into your freezer in order to get rid of any smells that might be present in there, and rub them over your hands before washing them in order to neutralize the smell of chopped onions, garlic, or other strong plant odors.

Dried coffee grounds can also be used as an odor neutralizer in other locations around the house, either keeping them in a container with ventilation in it or making small sachets for the grounds to go in. Add a drop or two of vanilla or some other scent that you prefer to the grounds if you want to help avoid the smell of coffee taking over whatever odor you are trying to remove.

There are even more uses for coffee grounds around the house. Provided the material is not prone to staining, you can use your leftover grounds as an abrasive cleaner to help you remove stuck-on or stubborn dirt or other materials. The grounds can also be used as an all-natural dye to give clothes or other cloth a brown tone (with the intensity of the brown depending on the amount of grounds used.)

You can even make use of coffee grounds when giving pets a bath in much the same manner as you would use it on your own hair. Not only will it soften and add shine to your pet’s coat, but it can also help to keep fleas and other pests at bay.

The world is going green and numerous campaigns are aiming at promoting the use of environmentally friendly and biodegradable materials for our daily needs. A lot is being spoken about soap nuts. Unlike the name suggests, soap nuts are neither soap nor nuts. They are closer to being berries whose shells are useful to us and are sometimes referred to as soap berries. What are soap nuts? A soap nut is the common term for fruit of the Sapindus/ Ritha tree which grows well in warm, clement and sultry regions. Soap nuts are widely grown in India, Nepal and other South Asian countries. Sapindus trifoliatus and Sapindus mukorossi are the two most common varieties of soap nuts, the former being small in size and the latter the more commonly used and larger sized variety. A soap nut is a tiny fruit which feels waxy to the touch and is covered by a solid outer casing. It is this hard outer shell that is most sought after and is used in the various soap nut products that are now gaining popularity. The soap nuts ripen like any other fruit and fall from the trees. They are then collected by the harvesters and the outer shells are removed and separated from the fruit inside. The shell of the soap nuts are then dried in a natural manner by placing them under the sun, thereby eliminating the need to use any harmful chemicals. The unique ingredient of a soap nut shell that makes it very useful is what are called saponins. Soap nuts hold 12% saponins which are used in many commercial detergents and have natural detergent properties. These saponins are released when the soap nut shells come into contact with water and are, therefore, a great alternative to commonly used washing powders and chemical detergents. They are especially used in washing garments made of wool and silk due to the delicate nature of the fabrics. They are an all natural and environmentally friendly means of washing clothes, and do not damage clothes, as they contain no harmful chemicals. Some other uses of soap Nuts Soap nuts are also used in the preparation of soaps, shampoos, lotions, skin cleansing creams, products for pets and in ayurvedic medicine preparations. Sapindus mukorossi, the larger variety of soap nuts, is a part of many medical ayurvedic formulations and featured in the list of herbs and minerals used in Ayurveda. They can been used in the treatment of extreme salivation in pets, epilepsy, migraines, psoriasis, getting rid of freckles, eczema and chlorosis. Soap nuts are also used as emetics, contraceptives and expectorants. In addition, soap nuts are an excellent way to get rid of lice that may be present in the scalp due to their insecticidal properties. Soap nuts also have anti-microbial properties that make them invaluable for greywater and septic systems. It is common to find jewelers in Indonesia and India who use soap nuts as a means to remove tarnish from precious metals such as silver. Some advantages of using soap nuts are: Soap nuts are a biodegradable and renewable resources that can be added to your compost once you are done using them. Soap nuts do not cause any allergies, making them safe for pets and even babies. They are especially great for people with allergies such as dermatitis and other skin irritations that occur due to the chemicals used in detergents and laundry powders. Clothes washed using soap nuts do not cause any irritation or allergies to the skin. Soap nuts do not contain chemicals or bleaches which translates to retention of colors on your fabrics and therefore no fading of colors on clothes. Soap nuts are a good option from a financial point of view. They are cheaper than other detergent brands that you commonly use. Nearly 400 loads of clothes can be washed using a kilo of soap nuts, thereby saving you 20 to 50% of your laundry costs. Also, a rinse cycle is not necessary with soap nuts. This helps reduce your water consumption and save on your utilities bill. There is no need to use fabric softeners when laundry is done using soap nuts, cutting costs even more.

Here’s a list of things that if forgotten could come back to haunt you later. Just use these ideas to help you brainstorm so you can make your own moving checklist planer.

Utilities

Utilities are the things that you had to have hooked up to your home when you moved in. Your utilities could include; electricity, gas, water, sewer, trash, cable, satellite, oil, and propane.

Professional Services

Many of your professional services do not necessarily need to be canceled. You will just need to contact them to inform them of your new address. Some of these could be saved for after your move if need be. Your professional services could include; doctors, dentists, accountant, lawyer, broker, and insurance agencies.

Publications

Some of your publications will need to be canceled while others will just need your address changed. Some of your publications may include; newspapers, magazines, newsletters, and journals.

Other Accounts

Other accounts that you will need to cancel or change the address might include; post office box; pharmacy, dry cleaner, lawn service, bank, video rental store, credit card company, laundry service, auto finance company, and health club.

Keep your list in a safe place so that you can use it to get your services turned on again after you get to your new home. If for some reason you just don’t have time or forget to get all of your accounts canceled or the addresses changed then get them taken care of as soon as your can. Putting it off could end up costing you more money.

Imagine a life without chemicals and therefore being able to live in a more “green” manner. Wouldn’t it be great to have a 100% natural, environmentally friendly and renewable source that you can use for most of your routine tasks and eliminate chemical-based products in the process? There are forums, activist groups and major campaigns targeted towards making the planet greener and safer place to live in. We hear talks and news reports about how modern technology and chemical based products are polluting the environment and how slowly but steadily we are causing the earth to become more and more polluted. While there are many who are not affected even remotely by such discussions there are many more who care and wish to make a contribution towards reducing our “carbon footprint” on this earth.

It seems almost impossible for individuals to join together and rally the big companies for change toward greener living. It is easy, however, to make small adjustments to our lives individually. It is like the old saying: Millions of small drops make a vast ocean. Each of us can contribute towards betterment of the environment by using alternative natural methods in our daily life and avoiding products containing pollutants, which destroy the environment and negatively impact our health. One way of preserving the environment is the use of soap nuts for performing routine tasks such as cleaning, washing and laundry. Many people are not aware of this natural fruit that makes it possible to be “greener” while going about our daily lives.

Soap nuts are the fruit of the Sapindus tree that is native to India, Nepal and some other South Asian countries. They require warm and tropical weather conditions for their growth. They are an excellent source for all cleaning purposes and the process of harvesting them is purely natural and does not include the use of any chemicals or toxins. A soap nut consists of a small inner fruit and a solid outer shell. It is the shell that is of most use in preparing soap nut based cleaning products. The fruits are simply picked up after they ripen and fall out of trees and dried naturally in the sun; then they are ready for use. In fact, these soap nuts contain a substance called saponin which is extracted, and then used in commercial soaps and detergents. When the shell of the soap nut comes into contact with water, the saponin is released, allowing water to penetrate the fabric and remove grime from the fabric.

Why should you use soap nuts?

Soap nuts have anti-microbial properties which make them excellent for bathing purposes. They keep the skin smooth, protected and free of infections. They are great for people suffering from eczema and other skin disorders.

Soap nuts can also be used as a natural additive to shampoos and bath gels. Soap nut liquid or powder can be used to wash hair effectively. The process removes and treats bacteria, lice and prevents scalp infections from occurring. Soap nuts are also known to add luster, body and smoothness to hair.

Soap nuts are also an excellent insecticide. Make a mild solution of soap nuts to spray on the plants in your garden everyday. This keeps common insects away from your garden.

Soap nuts are also used for household cleaning. Make a liquid solution and use it to spray down counters, sinks, floors etc.

Soap nuts are a very effective and safe laundry detergent alternative. They do not contain any chemicals and are safe for all laundry, including cloth diapers, lingerie and hand washables.

Soap nuts have a long history when it comes to treating skin conditions such as eliminating freckles, erasing fine lines, and ridding cracks in the skin. Soap nuts have been used for generations in India to treat eczema and psoriasis effectively and in the past few decades have been used in Europe with very positive results. The best thing about using soap nuts is that they are safe and effective for people that are allergic to even the mildest form of astringents or cleansers that are purchased in the stores. In most cases, even the cleansers that are labeled allergy free or for sensitive skin can be damaging to sufferers of eczema and psoriasis. Soap nuts have also been used in the United States for people who have been diagnosed with these skin conditions.

Soap Nuts for Eczema? It has always been recommended that people with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis should not use any type of cleansers on their skin. This is almost impossible considering that cleansers are in just about everything that is used commonly around the household and it is said that people who suffer from these types of skin conditions should try to avoid anything labeled as a detergent or soap. Soap nuts are among the list of herbs and minerals in Ayurvedic shampoos and cleansers and they are used in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for eczema and psoriasis. Eczema affects both males and females alike and age is not a factor. Common symptoms of mild eczema can include dry, hot and itchy skin but more severe forms of the condition can result in the skin becoming raw, broken and bleeding.

Helping Eczema & PsoriasisRather than having to resort to prescription medicine to treat your eczema and psoriasis, first try ground soap nut husks as they provide a totally natural chemical free detergent for treatment. Soap nuts are recommended for babies and for people who develop allergies to conventional washing products, as they contain no allergenic substances. This is extremely important for those who suffer from skin disorders because many times the clothes that are being washed can trigger the skin condition and cause it to worsen. Soap nuts are all natural and have no smell to them which is the main reason that they are so successful in ridding skin disorders and preventing future outbreaks.

Soap Nut StudiesMany studies have proven that some people who have eczema have had their problems diminish after switching to soap nuts as a laundry detergent and as a skin cleanser. Soap nuts lead to stable soapy foam when they come in contact with water. Saponin’s can replace conventional chemical detergents such as sodium laureth sulphate that are becoming increasingly unacceptable to the consumer due to fears concerning the safety of the chemical. Naturally occurring, Saponin’s provide the foaming agent necessary in shampoo or shower gel that are gentler on the body and more environmentally friendly. According to Professor C. Kamaswara Rao of the Department of Forests Environment and Ecology of the Government of Karnataka, the biggest environmental benefits of the soap nuts in conjunction with prevention and elimination of skin conditions is through its anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties.

For more information visit http://www.BuySoapNuts.com

Ever since the inception of industrial revolution, life has become fast and the developments in the fields of science and technology has made human life simple and more convenient. All the hassles of day to day activities have been taken care by the complex dynamics of technology. Every night we sleep with a dream and the next morning we are out in the market to buy the dream that has already been converted to reality.

But, in spite of this we are bothered, the cause being the technology itself. With all its goods kept on one side, technology also has a cruel face on the other side of the fence. With all its developments if, technology is giving us a hassle free life, it is also giving us a polluted environment to live in. Water, air and even sound are not being spared. The chemicals coming out as the byproducts are harming our environment and are directly and indirectly harming us. It is just that we are not able to realize until we are in danger.

Keeping aside the macro level alerts like global warming, increase in the sea level etc, let us peep into our daily life and see at micro level, the impact of technical developments. Covering every aspect in the discussion to follow may be outside the scope of this article and hence we will try to limit our discussion only to a simple chemical product- the laundry detergent.

A combination of different chemical substances to clean our clothes is what we call laundry detergent. When mixed with water this detergent creates lather and the chemicals penetrate deep inside the clothes to clean the dirt and the harmful microbes present in them. But studies show that long term usage of these detergents can lead to skin troubles, not to mention about the water pollution which disturbs the balance of the aquatic life!

A question arises, is there something to make the earth greener and pollution free? Yes, there is. Most of us are unaware of a natural substance which can substitute this laundry detergent and is 100% natural. The substance is known as Soap Nut and is a fruit of a tree called Sapindus. Native to Nepal, India and some other South Asian countries, this tree requires a warm and tropical environment to grow. The harvesting process of this soap nut is completely natural and does not call for any toxin or chemical involvement.

The Soap Nut consists of a solid and hard outer shell and a small fruit inside it. This outer shell is used for making cleaning products. After the fruit ripens, it falls to the ground from tree. It is then picked up and then dried under the sun and is ready to use. Saponin, a natural substance, is present in the Soap Nut. When the Soap Nut is soaked in water, the Saponins are released. This helps the water to penetrate the fabric and clean it. The Soap Nut is a good replacement of the commercial detergents also because of the fact that it has a natural anti-microbial property which kills the harmful microbes present in the dirt. Because Soap Nuts do not contain any added dyes or chemicals, they do not create very many bubbles or lather but are capable of cleaning clothes as effectively as the commercial laundry detergents.

Natural and harmless, these Soap Nuts can actually help us to take a step ahead in a greener and more natural world. Soap Nuts do not disrespect technology but rather attempt to save the world from a chemical holocaust. Using soap nuts as a laundry detergent is a tribute to nature and the solutions it gives us.
